good product. I was able to transfer my miniDV tapes directly to DVD. It was a bit of a learning curve, but it's a very simple process. I wouldn't agree with other reviewers that the files have to be copied to the hard drive first. This product is not intended for this. Yes, technically you can do it, but it won't look like a good MPEG file. You'll end up with 5 to 6 .vod files (1GB each) that you'll have to piece together somehow if you want to watch them as one movie. Also, you cannot name these files anything you like when saving them to disk. You can only specify the output folder. Only after you have these files on your computer can you rename them as you wish. Many other files (related to your video) that may have been created during the save are also saved in this folder. So the best way is to get your video to DVD directly, and then if you want to create MPEG, DivX or other format files on your computer, you can rip that DVD. There are many programs you can use to do this, including some very good free programs that you can find online. One thing I don't like so far is that there is no way to stop transferring videos to DVD. and then restart. Once you stop recording, the DVD will be finalized automatically. Therefore, you should ensure that the source of your video is edited before transferring it to DVD. Overall I am satisfied with this product. I had no problems either during the installation or during the actual file transfer. I am using Vista 32bit on my computer with 3GB RAM and Dual-Core 1.9 processor. The program didn't take up many resources and I was able to surf the web while my video played in the background. The output file was of good quality. When I watched it on my 52 inch plasma TV it looked pretty decent. At least I can say that the video did not deteriorate during the transfer. (but no better either) You get almost the same quality as on the original tape.
