I ordered a smaller size first to fit my 8 year old (medium height) son. After washing, she sat down in such a way that it was impossible to put it on her head. I exchanged the item for a size X/L. (The return process was very easy and the larger sweatshirt was received promptly). I just got a bigger size. I washed it before allowing him to put it on and when he put it on he just pulled it on enough to wear a shirt underneath. It is comfortable! I don't think it will wear out very much and need to be given to a smaller child. My son loves the color! A NOTICE. These sizes will get much smaller after washing.
