You slide the panels over each other to add length, then insert a screw and line it up with the closest inner panel hole to secure it. This means that all of the strength of this device is held within the strength of a small screw in the center of the device. There isn't even a second hole on the inner panel to make it more stable. The husband plans to fix this by drilling a few extra holes and adding extra screws, so we'll leave it at that. Note, however, that if you really want to be sure, you'll need to make these adjustments.
