Review on Enhanced E4200 v2 Router: Linksys Maximum Performance Dual-Band N900 by Hector Mak

Save $$$ compared to EA4500

Just ordered this and waiting for it to arrive but thought I'd share that this router is the same as the more expensive EA4500. In fact, you can update the firmware on this one with the EA4500 firmware and get the same router for less money. This should save you some money as they sell off their leftover stock. UPDATE: I received the router installed and running the Cisco Connect cloud firmware available from Cisco, there is no need to flash the EA4500 firmware as they have made the cloud firmware available for the E4200v2. In terms of performance, the router works as expected and I like the cloud firmware better than the stock firmware. However, I encountered the problem of setting up the router out of the box. I tried running the included installation CD on my Macbook with Mountain Loin 10.8 installed and I got an error message saying the operating system is not supported. Please use OSX 10.7 or higher. Last time I checked 10.8 was greater than 10.7 I thought I had an old hard drive so I went to the support site and downloaded the installer from the site believing the newer versions would fix the problem would. No, same problem. I then went to my router.local with my web browser, configured the router via the browser and flashed the new firmware. You need to download the cloud firmware from the support site and update it manually. The automatic update only updated it to a non-cloud version. After tinkering around for about an hour I got everything set up the way I wanted and everything seems fine. Time will tell how long it lasts, although it should be better than the Westell Frontier router with its DSL.

Pros
  • Nice
Cons
  • Good but not great
