Review on ✈️ Unlock the Skies: Garmin D2 Air - The Ultimate GPS Smartwatch for Aviators by Kyle Ross

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Weak GPS receiver, nice watch.

I really wanted to like this watch but sent it back. This is a beautiful watch with a great screen. I'm an airline pilot and used it for four days while traveling. During this time I found the GPS unreliable even when connected to the Connectivity app as well as the Garmin Pilot app (it comes with a 3 month trial of Garmin Pilot). Also, you need a workaround if you want to use the watch on both iPad and iPhone. That includes turning off Bluetooth for one or the other. Most of the time, when the GPS connected, it did a good job of transferring data to the iPad, but to be honest it lost more connection than it kept. It doesn't matter if I launched it on the ground or in the air. In the meantime, my iPhone GPS stayed 100% connected to the Garmin Pilot at all altitudes. I also tried Safe Taxi in the Garmin Pilot app with the watch streaming data to the iPad, and it was far enough away that it showed me taxiing in the terminal building when I was 1/4 mile on the taxiway was removed. I'm not sure if this is an app or watch issue. I love the training features and pretty much everything else Garmin has to offer so I traded that for the Venu. It's very similar but without the pilot footage. The battery worked well and lasted all day when trying to connect to satellites. The device charges very quickly. Like a smart watch, 5 stars. There are only three pilot's watches. I love the Garmin product, but the D2 Air just didn't have enough GPS capability (on which all aviation functions depend) to justify the extra cost.

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • I won't say anything
