Seagate is silently changing the warranty for a real hard drive

For some reason Seagate decided to sell closed drivers at a lower price than an identical "naked" drive. For many years they have honored the guarantee that the enclosure and the actual drive remain in sync. In the US this is the correct method as removing the case does not void the warranty. However, after years of benevolence from PC and storage enthusiasts, Seagate has decided - for erroneous reasons - to retroactively revoke the internal drive warranty - even for drives that have already been sold. I created an issue with their support and they assured me that the issue would be resolved within 3 days. It's been 45 days and the warranty is still not resolved and not even providing updates. If you just look at the consumers who buy these drives, you'll see that a large proportion only want an internal drive. It seems that Seagate and other hard drive manufacturers want their most loyal customers to either pay a "tax" to get a bare drive or a sealed drive that they then deny warranty. It simply means there is more plastic waste; The USB 3.1 micro connector is a joke - it hasn't been used in over a year because it's so fragile. Do you really want 16TB of data to depend on such a flimsy connection? Now it's even worse, for a variety of reasons hard drive prices are going through the roof, but Seagate continues to release proprietary drivers knowing hard drives will continue to be sold and used. no way - Seagate will play dumb at this point if you ever need to call on the warranty.
