UPDATE: 2 years later I bought another one for another laptop and found that ethernet works there. Went back to my original setup and worked there. Restored a star I took off! Not sure what changed, but probably something in the Windoze or Dell drivers. Both Alienware and Inspiron work with external monitors, mice, keyboards and Ethernet connected to the laptop via USB-A. FIRST REVIEW: I have a beautiful Dell U3011 monitor with more pixels than my new Alienware 17 inch laptop. But an HDMI connection only works with a width of 1900px (as opposed to the native 2650px for the laptop and external monitor). I tried the Revain Basics HDMI/DVI cable, but even though it was advertised as Dual Link, it was only supported 1200px width! However, Kensington plugged into the laptop's USB 3 port and allowed me to easily connect the DisplayPort cable from the docking station to the monitor. No need to install drivers, no configuration required. Strangely, my Nvidia graphics card doesn't think. There's even an external monitor, but Windows settings allow me to independently duplicate or extend the display with the same or different resolutions on the two displays. I plugged my old USB 2 hub into one of the Kensington ports and everything just worked: mouse, keyboard, tin can, printer. External speakers work fine when plugged into the headphone jack, so removing my laptop requires power, ethernet, and a USB output. I ONLY took off one star because the ethernet port isn't working and there doesn't seem to be any info on how to set anything up. The Kensington website has a downloadable .exe on their resource page but no idea what to do with it. Windows also doesn't allow me to update the driver (the button is grayed out, which I've never seen before).
