Wearing a mask is a must in downtown Chicago where the wind chills are below zero. I love that it's easy to put on as a neck warmer and you can pull up the top if needed. My previous balaclava was very thick and although it was very warm it was either 100% on or off. This is light, but protects well against biting wind. The ears have a kind of double layer: you can pull the lower front part over the ears and the upper part of the hood closes the ears again. So it's a nice double layer over the ears.
