The first one I ordered was slightly deformed and could not lie on its own. It touches in the middle but the ends stick out 0.5-1mm on each side. So I ordered another one. The new one I ordered was different. The first one said "Made in China" on the box, while the new one said "Made in Japan" on both the box and the scale itself. The "Made in Japan" version had Shinwa written in English, while the "Made in China" version had Shinwa written in katakana. On closer inspection, the print was slightly better on the Japanese version, especially with the big red numbers. The edge of the Chinese version wasn't as smooth. Another thing to note is that at the 300mm mark they were about 0.1mm apart when I zeroed them. I haven't bothered to check which one is more accurate because that type of error fits what I'm using it for. BOTH are legitimate Shinwa products. Shinwa has 2 factories in China and one in Japan. Maybe I just got a bad one, but the Chinese version definitely wasn't as good as the Japanese one. I'm very happy with the Made in Japan version I currently have, I've returned the slightly distorted Chinese version. It's not as pretty as my Starrett, but it's five times cheaper and well worth it. Although I had issues with the first one I got I will buy Shinwa again as they are very good value for money.
