I use SPD on my road bike simply because it's easy to get on and off. They had to be broken in a bit (and the idle screws tightened a bit), but once they did, they worked just as well as any Shimano equivalent. If you want to pedal, SPDs are great for commuting, riding on the road, trails, or anywhere. Getting in and out takes some practice, although it may feel a bit tedious at first. I've ridden hundreds of miles and hundreds of clicks. If you love weight you can shave a few grams elsewhere, but if you just like riding a bike these are definitely worth a look.
