Hard to tell what gets filtered and what doesn't, what gets filtered is visible enough for me to believe. I installed this and a GE cabinet in the shower. Ridiculously small shower filters need frequent replacement and cost a small fortune, this larger filter should last about a year for my wife and I to use. I took out the cartridge after just over a month of use and was shocked to find that the initially bright white medium was a dirty brownish orange that is mostly rust. While it's completely harmless, I don't want to smoke myself out with something I don't have either.
