Review on Olympus V207080BU000 OM D E M1X by Toni Lewis

$3,000 Olympus bug.

Olympus makes some of the best cameras in the business, they really do. I have used most of the cameras and they are great. Autofocus, speed, colors, looks - it's all there. My current camera is the EM1 Mark II and it's fantastic. You are probably wondering why this camera has 2 stars. Well, first off, the image quality is identical to the EM1 Mark II. There hasn't been any advancement in the sensor since 2016, and having the same sensor in a $3,000 camera is shocking. I don't understand why they didn't upgrade the sensor, at least to improve its high ISO performance. Maybe Sony didn't have a new sensor for them, so they stuck with the same one they had in 2016. Second, the camera has a "small" electronic viewfinder for its price range. For $3,000 I expect a huge, bright electronic viewfinder. Unfortunately it isn't. It's not bad, but it's definitely the worst in its price range. It's almost identical to the EM1 Mark II. The camera is bigger and heavier, which defeats the purpose of the Micro Four Third. If anyone needs a grip, they can buy it for the EM1 Mark II. Yes, the autofocus is great, but so is the EM1 Mark II. It looks like Olympus just took the EM1 Mark II, doubled the processor, added a permanent grip that can hold 2 batteries, and doubled the price. This is probably the least innovative camera Olympus has released and a huge disappointment. The camera shouldn't cost more than $2,200. At $3,000, it's overpriced and becoming extremely niche. I hope that the next camera Olympus releases will be a real upgrade over previous models and let's not throw everything we have in the lab into the idea of a camera. They certainly won't sell many of these cameras and it will be a commercial failure.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Good, but not great
