Really Nice Student Grade

Very good pens for their purpose. This is a grade for students and they do well in this category. It takes some water to melt the binder, no pencil marks are left and the colors are beautiful. They reactivate a bit after drying, so keep that in mind when applying layers. I've found that the best way to add additional color onto a dry layer (like adding shadows or contrasts) is to use the lift and fill technique. (Dab a thick layer of chalk onto a separate piece of paper, loosen it with a damp brush and then sweep it over the drawing.) This method is also suitable for wet-on-wet application for certain effects. I tested the pens on several papers including Arches watercolor paper, Strathmore mixed media, watercolor and Bristol and Canson Plein Air card stock. For the brightest colors and smoothest, most consistent results, Strathmore 500 Bristol Plate Finish was the best paper, followed by Arches Hot Print. I will choose between these two in the future depending on what type of work I have planned. These pens will not and are not intended to replace your full size watercolors, but they work well for small artwork, mixed media with color, or as a tint for colored pencils to create a pen and blur effect, or draw on the go. Goldfaber Aqua easily outperformed my original Derwent watercolor pencils (not to be confused with Inktense, which I threw away a long time ago and can't compare). I was so pleased with it that I switched to Albrecht DΓΌrer's high-quality watercolor pencils.
