Review on Cetearyl Alcohol Homemade Lotions Co Emulsifier by Shantel Griffin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Cetearyl alcohol is a combination of stearyl and cetyl alcohols.

I bought this cetearyl alcohol to use as a thickening agent in my homemade lotions. I used coconut oil and shea butter in most of my recipes to thicken the lotion, but got bored quickly. I spent a few weeks reading about alcohols and more before finally settling on cetearyl alcohol. Cetearyl alcohol is a combination of stearyl and cetyl alcohols. All 3 alcohols are non-drying and add moisturizing properties to your lotion while thickening it. I chose Cetearil because I read that it was easier to manage than the other two and I thought why not take a combination. I added this cetearyl alcohol to the oil phase of my lotion as it cannot be added to the water phase. My lotion has exactly the texture and consistency I was hoping for. Here's the recipe I used: 1 ounce pumpkin seed oil, 1 ounce watermelon seed oil, and 4 ounces hemp seed oil, 1/2 ounce emulsifying wax, 1 ounce beeswax, 1 ounce cetearyl alcohol, 1 ounce aloe vera gel, 1 ounce aloe vera gel. homemade German chamomile hydrolate, 10 drops of German chamomile essential oil, 10 drops of yarrow essential oil. Heat/melt all oils, waxes and cetearyl alcohol in a water bath. In a separate steamer, bring the aloe vera gel and hydrosol to the boil. Once melted and heated, mix all ingredients (including essential oils) and puree using a blender or immersion blender. I also added 4% SF-Leucid Liquid and Coconut Amiticide to the chilling phase for preservation (both are natural preservatives, SF-Leucid Liquid is a lactobacilli preservative made from a radish enzyme and Amticide is a coconut-derived preservative). After mixing the ingredients well, transfer the mixture to a stainless steel bowl that has been chilled in the refrigerator. This will help cool and thicken the lotion. I whip/mix my lotions for at least 5-10 minutes to ensure the lotion doesn't separate. This cetearyl alcohol worked great in my homemade lotion. I can't wait to make more batches of the lotion and play around with the different textures that result from different amounts of cetearyl alcohol. I took a photo of this lotion I made with this cetearyl alcohol to show the final product.
