I don't know if people got a bad batch but my water bottle doesn't smell like plastic or chemicals. I don't know if this is just human error, but my straw works great. This is the function of the POP UP straw. When the top is open, it pops open. When the top is closed, it will bounce down. If it doesn't, you may have positioned it incorrectly. I'm not sure if people got a ton of bags, but I've tossed and twisted this thing, locked and opened it all over the place, and I haven't seen any leaks. My little niece even picked the thing up and nothing was spilled. This thing is MUCH bigger than I thought it would be! Hahaha but this is SUPER! Instead of filling my Yeti 3 times a day, I only need 2. I love it!
