is present to add extra padding for cycling use indoors. Cycling shoes can be great outdoors, but indoors you need a little more cushioning as you can feel the area where the spikes engage. I wasn't impressed with the flimsy material they put in. It is not durable and does not relieve pain in the area where your spike sits, nor was there anything to cover or protect the open hole in the bottom of the shoe. I had to stuff cardboard in and use duct tape to cover the hole. I don't think I will buy them again
