I have a problem in that I am both picky and cheap/frugal (and not rich). I've been looking for new shelves for our living room to put on either side of our TV for some time now, and really felt I should finally graduate from clearance and other cheap furniture and splurge on something nicer and more high-end. The shelf I wanted on overstock.com was no longer available so I started looking elsewhere, including at places like Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel. Found one at Pottery Barn on sale for $700 and I would need 2 so total would be $1400. I was ready to order that until my husband suggested I keep looking to see if I can find something that looks comparable but is cheaper.I then looked through a ton here on amazon. There was a specific style I was looking for and this fit the bill. I was nervous about how "fake" these would look at this low price. I was also nervous about ordering 2 since that runs up the risk that at least one of them will come defective in some way.All turned out well. Everything was packaged carefully and there were no defects, no screws not able to screw in the right way, etc. The one "problem" we had was that one of the shelves may have been short a screw of a certain type - I can't remember exactly. I remember that in total we did not get all the screws that we were supposed to, but because they include extra anyway, we ended up, between the 2 shelves, with just enough. The first shelf took my husband and I about 90 minutes to put together. The second one took 45 minutes. He is about a 7.5-8 on a scale of 1-10 in terms of "handy-ness" and I am a 3. It is not really difficult, just takes time. They look very nice once put together and I don't think that anyone would ever guess that I got them both for under $250. I was going for an elegant, "expensive" (or expensive enough) look and I am satisfied with these. Psychologically I would have been happier with the Pottery Barn shelves but my bank account is happier with these.it's a great compromise and I have no regrets. In terms of sturdiness, these shelves are more thin than thick. I am using the shelves for books mainly and I was a little nervous about putting too many on there, but the description says each shelf can hold up to 50 lbs so I think these should be more than fine for my purposes.
