Audioengine packages its products well, the speakers/cables in the box are protected with microfiber bags and the additional HD3-only outer box is welcome, especially for people who like me must be sent all over the world. I like the look of the walnut, but it does NOT look like what Audioengine shows on their website, it's faded, otherwise the build quality is decent. Setting up the HD3 is just as easy as with other powered speakers, a pair of Kanto S2 speaker stands would be nice to bring, but be aware that an external power supply can be a problem for cable management. The front-facing knob is convenient for volume control of various games and music applications, it's really a must-have for desktop customization. Most of the time I listen at around 25%-50% volume, no need to crank it up, the HD3 has good sound detail at low volumes. With a USB connection, the HD3 sounds more balanced and significantly cleaner than my previous speakers, the Bose Companion 2 III. There isn't much bass, but it's sufficient for near-field listening, the surround sound in games seems livelier, more exciting, and you can tell where the noises are coming from. People with USB audio input lag have never been a problem for me, Audioengine may have already fixed this for their later versions. The built in headphone amp is quite close to the iPhone SE 2016 when listening to my Sony WH1000XM3, not even a difference in detail but lack of bass that I can detect. And I found it odd that at very low volumes only the right side of the earbuds produced HD3 sound, actually I was expecting more from this part. One of the reasons I chose the HD3 is that it supports Bluetooth as far as my bed is concerned. in front of the table, I can just lie on it, watch comics or surf the web while listening to HD3 wirelessly on tablets or phones, it's quite nice. An antenna is a must for a Bluetooth connection, otherwise you will experience audio lag when watching videos. The HD3 has a noise problem when there is no sound playing. Higher volume makes it clearer, I can hear it within 30cm when focusing at max volume. But let's face it, the noise is coming from the computer, outside the window, and the electric fans are all louder than the HD3, so you're probably fine as long as you're not sitting directly in front of the HD3 and leaving it idle at maximum volume. , at least in my case. Overall the Audioengine HD3 are small all in one functional speaker system that fits on my tin desk, just plug in the power cord and it does the work for you with amazing sound quality. So why not try?
