Review on Boost Cable Tracing Efficiency with Tempo Communications 701K G Generator Probe by James Lesley

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Maybe I just misunderstood.

Maybe I just got a bad device, but at prices close to Fluke I got the quality of HF Tools. The receiver has difficulty picking up a signal within a few inches of Category 5 (stripped) wire, and requires direct contact with bare wire if it is less than 12 inches long. Of course it will detect the sound if the probe is placed directly on the outer shield, but if you intend to use the device to run cables through walls, forget it. The same applies to COAX. If you're chasing coax, do yourself a favour. Make your own adapter with an open wire and shield on one end and a standard connector on the other. Otherwise you will need to use the included alligator clips to make an open connection between the center wire and the shield. No, the clips are not large enough to enclose the connector from the outside. When replacing the probe tip, do not damage the device by attempting to remove the probe tip as there are no instructions on how to do this. It won't come loose until you turn the probe over and loosen (almost completely) the small Phillips head screw next to the probe tip that separates the housing halves so the probe can be pulled out. I sent the device back after using it once; definitely not worth the money.

Pros
  • A lot of positive emotions
Cons
  • No performance
