Great Scale - Simple, Accurate, Affordable

This 1000 lb Sherline LM 1000 Trailer Tongue Scale is worth its weight in gold. MUCH better than using joists, dowels and floor scales. I just put it on my jack and jacked it up so it was pressing against the center of the trailer's tongue hitch, lifting the trailer's leg off the ground. A quick check to make sure everything is level, a few light shakes on the trailer tongue to ensure the weighing piston is fully seated, and voilΓ : accurate tongue weight measurements in less than five minutes. Why is it important? A simple walk from the front of the boat/trailer to the rear will be a revelation as this scale demonstrates just how much the average adult's body weight (190 pounds) can change the weight on the trailer tongue. You'll immediately see that a few hasty decisions tossing a loaded refrigerator, propane tank and other cargo onto the back of your boat/trailer can make a world of difference in towing dynamics. But with weights like this you can just load everything up as usual and check the right tongue weight before you ride. Much better than guessing. My body weight is between 185 and 195. When I first got the scale, I stepped on it and it showed 190 on my nose, so it's definitely accurate within +/- 5 pounds. At least that's accurate enough for the intended use. If you are carrying drawbar weights, just make sure they are centered on the hitch, level with the trailer and all gear etc loaded as you will be towing it. The hydraulic ram can bind a bit when new, so always rock the trailer a little to calm it down. The first two measurements I took were 10 pounds off, but once it broke the next five measurements I took were within 3 pounds. or dead every time as others have noted, I think the shaft/o-rings can be a bit stiff or dry inside until you turn it on by putting a heavy weight on it a few times. Ideally, you should choose a scale about twice the size you would expect to weigh your tongue. In my case, I'm looking for a tongue weight of around 640lbs, so I bought a 1000lb scale. Larger scales are more difficult to read accurately (as the weight markings get smaller/inaccurate as the capacity increases) and more importantly, this type of scale is usually most accurate in the middle of its capacity range (ie around 250g). -750 pounds) and not at the highest or lowest end. Store it indoors at room temperature in a zip-top plastic bag, and it should keep the liquid warm and the body rust-free for years of reliable, accurate use. I can't confirm that's the case with this model as I haven't had mine in a very long time, but I'm pretty sure it will hold up if stored properly. It looks fairly well built and I was impressed with the repeatability of the readings used. (Several times I've taken weights of a known weight and moved them 10 or 12 times. Each time I've brought that weight back to the same spot, I've gotten the same tongue reading, which is a very good sign that the scale is accurate..) In short, if you care about the weight of the language, this is a good investment.
