Review on ASUS VG28UQL1A 144HZ Gaming Monitor: Curved 4K Display with Flicker-Free Technology, Anti Glare Screen, and Blue Light Filter by Jakiel Basque

The VG28UQL1A is riddled with firmware issues that ruin a great monitor.

This review is about the VG27UQL1A which I am happy with the picture quality but overall terrible with many others which I hope firmware will fix as they ruin my experience: Problems: - When plugged in the Playback completely static the sound. for no good reason. This happens when I am connected to DisplayPort and there is no sound from the computer. In fact, the monitor's audio settings say the volume is 0 and off. But it will play statically indefinitely. That annoying static hum I'm hearing now prompted me to write a bad review pointing out its issues, so maybe something good will come of it. - The monitor is smart enough to be incredibly dumb with multiple inputs. I have an HDMI work computer and a DisplayPort gaming computer. I restart my gaming PC when the monitor uses DisplayPort and it immediately switches to HDMI. I then have to switch back to DisplayPort in the monitor settings as it doesn't switch by itself. The monitor doesn't like switching inputs via the menu and will often refuse to do so unless I give it a good 10 seconds between input switching. It takes longer than it takes to restart my gaming PC and it's very annoying. The monitor does not allow you to view the menus when there is no active connection to the computer. If it's not connected to an active video connection (or just doesn't think it's connected), when you turn it on it immediately goes into standby mode and it's not possible to view the menu settings. When I first turned on the monitor I thought it was broken because I couldn't get into the menu. My Windows 10 gaming PC with RX 580 often fails to access or see the monitor. I turned off my computer several times. and the monitor never connects to my computer. Adding another monitor to the PC shows it's up and working and Windows can't see the display. If after 20 minutes you do not understand what is happening, the display will be randomly recognized again. - The monitor advertises 4k@144Hz over DisplayPort, but that's only possible when using a DP1.4 connection AND DSC (compression), otherwise you're over DP 1.4 bandwidth. However, DP 1.4 can support 4k@120Hz, which is close enough, however the monitor's EDID will not profile it. The maximum setting I can get on my PC that doesn't support DSC is 4k @ 100Hz. I had to use the Windows CRU tool to force 4k@120Hz, which works great but should be available by default for the monitor. I have had several previous monitors and all of these issues are unique to this monitor. I was on firmware V024 and upgraded to the latest firmware V025 but all these issues still persist. I thought ASUS was a reputable company and time will tell if they fix this, but I'm seriously considering bringing it back given these issues. All of the hardware behind the product seems decent, but it looks like they've seriously messed up the firmware for the monitor.
