So he found the locking piece fitted the wrong way round. It was weird, but not the end of the world. I found that I could very carefully unscrew it and turn it back the right way. Big! I don't have to exchange it for a new one. The problem is that at the time it didn't have a secure fit between the glass and the plastic/rubber part so it slipped out and slammed against the counter when first used. Too bad. I've had one from a different manufacturer for years. It was cork rather than plastic and of a much better quality. I'll look for a better option, but so far I haven't found anything else.
