I don't know if others are telling you to buy a different size than you need, but I bought a 3" plug instead of my brass one and it worked fine. I was uncomfortable installing another brass connector as the threads were somewhat damaged from having to destroy the original connector. However, after noticing some people's feedback about over-tightening, I started tightening the nut just enough until the threads were tight but still loose. After that I hand screwed the plug up to the rim of the pipe, being careful not to loosen the threads by over tightening, then tightened the nut until tight, placed a bucket underneath and let some water in It was leaking as expected so I tightened it until it stopped. It might not be an option for everyone, but it allowed me to tighten it only as tightly as I needed. Don't ever be afraid to do it again as long as I have one of these handy.
