I don't think I will ever forget the characters or the story of this novel; it was so captivating and heartbreaking. I don't want to spoil too much plot or surprise at the end, but suffice it to say that a Chinese immigrant mother abandons her child and the book explores the aftermath for both of them. I learned a lot about what it's like and what it looks (and smells like) to be an immigrant in New York, I really felt like in the mind of a little boy Deming when he was adopted into a white family and felt both . Sympathy and disappointment for his well-meaning but limited foster parents. There are no easy answers or happy endings in this novel, but the story ending was very satisfying nonetheless. Like Deming, I learned what happened to destroy that family and realized that sometimes just knowing the truth can be the best balm for our deepest wounds. I can't wait to see what Ko writes next.
