This is a well made horizontal rack to keep your plates securely upright. So it works fine. It also looks great wherever you put it - full, half full or even empty. I'm less impressed with this for displaying ceramic or china plates and wish there was a 'tiered' version. I like another reviewer's suggestion of padding the bottom rails with rubber or plastic tubing, and I would do that if I was storing or displaying fine china. But since I'm showing chip-resistant Polish porcelain stoneware and my porcelain is safe in the cupboard, I'm not worried about damaged edges. Cheaper versions of this type of product are available, but you won't be ashamed to place them alongside other desktop items that you can proudly show off to family and friends.
