It takes persistence to install, but the savings are worth it

I am a former light aircraft cabin assembly technician in a factory, so I have a lot of experience with interior installation and renovation. This review should be read with that perspective in mind. Overall I'm very happy with the result, but there are a few aspects of this product that DIYers should consider before proceeding with it. 1) This product requires destructive disassembly of your door panel. Like many manufacturers today, BMW used a fused plastic rivet construction in the door panel assemblies. The only way to remove these knots is to drill the "head" of the rivets. If you're unfamiliar with this technique, watch a few YouTube videos before you begin. If you drill them wrong, there will be no material to attach new fasteners. So make sure you do this step correctly. 2) The general idea with the kit is that you drill through the rivets holding the armrest in place, replace the doorknob, and then *screw* everything back up. Keep that in mind when you take it apart. Make sure you have material for the screws and make sure you have material for the screw head to hold on to. Also, I found it helpful to pre-drill the plastic to keep the screws from breaking. Use a tiny bit so you still have a good bite. 3) The two glued attachment points right next to the door handle CANNOT be re-attached so that the screws hold the door handle to the rest of the door, only the armrest. I know it's an exaggeration, but basically the door handle bolts to the armrest but not to the rest of the door panel. This is quite a big departure from the original panel design. I'm a bit worried about durability, but there are fasteners that attach the door handle directly to the door itself, rather than relying on a plate (also typical) for closing force, so it doesn't matter. With three With that in mind, I still rate this kit 5 stars. The value cannot be ignored. The "official" solution is to replace the door panel, which costs nearly $1,200 from trusted parts suppliers. Hooray! So for $30 you're going to have to do some destructive disassembly and get a little creative with repairs and reassemblies. The quality of the part itself leaves much to be desired. It's pleasantly soft to the touch, but doesn't have the "soft" top layer that BMW has. If you're concerned about durability, order two. Since the panel is screwed back on, you can now repeat this repair without destroying the panel. A win!
