Sound quality is terrible

I wasn't expecting much. I got her to help a nonverbal student participate in Circle Time - everyone else says their name, so I wanted to record me saying his name and having him press the button. The sound quality is so terrible that it is impossible to recognize it. But 3-year-olds don't care and love to play with it. So now I keep hearing the same garbled garbled word over and over as they run around and push the button. Also, there's no on/off switch, just REC and PLAY, so I'm guessing the batteries won't last very long because of that.
