Bad smell and taste: storage and organization

As I recently bought this I have only filled it with fresh drinking water so far. After leaving the water in for a day, I noticed that the water took on an odd taste. We were able to trace the taste to a similar smell emanating from a large diameter removable lid. There is a strong plastic smell emanating from the inside of this large lid. It's hard to believe it's food grade plastic, the smell is so strong and unpleasant. I'm going to wash the top in the dishwasher and if that doesn't work I'll leave it in the sun for a while to see if the gas smell can be stopped. If not, I'll send it back. Disappointing.
