Cardboard sheets _very_ thin. so thin that when my cats scratch them, they bulge and smack the ground. Since I use them outside of the litter box to give them space to clean their paws, pole hits happen every day. I can't say I would recommend everyone to buy these posts, but if you have already done so you can reduce the noise by using super glue (or Elmer's glue) and taping the edges of the notebook to the inside of the notebook (around the area). Sticking the pad on will keep it in place while you scratch and to remove the pad you just have to peel the edges of the box away from the pad to peel it off. This has allowed me to preserve some of my sanity while my cats are at work. their way through these very, very thin pads.
