A lot of output/headphone feedback leaked into my mic and vice versa. I couldn't use the mic at all because of the "echo" and the strong feedback. Using a different cable solved the problem. I was able to measure some continuity between the cable shield/ground and the mic input on the cable, which was causing the problem. I traced the leak to the cable's socket and can easily replace it.
