I'm looking through boxes of rags to be more sustainable and have switched to reusable cloth rags. They perform the same job as disposables, but are definitely less absorbent. Most of what I use existing rags for is wiping my hands or tools when I'm working on a car. They do a good job and the fact that I can wash them in warm water works well enough for rags. They come out of the box with a lot of lint so it's a good idea to wash them before use, which I didn't initially intend to do but ended up doing after working with them. I would recommend some sort of metal can or waste basket as it would be a fire hazard to just leave oil soaked rags around until you washed them.
