I was specifically looking for fine gravel for my planted aquarium and chose it for its darker color and smoothness. I prefer a darker substrate and needed a finer, smoother substrate for my bottom feeders, but didn't want to use sand. It's not as dark as I thought it would be, but it still looks great, like dark river rock with colorful pebbles. I have it in one tank that is medium hard at pH 7.4, another tank that I keep softer at pH 6.8 and another tank that is super soft at pH 6.4 so it doesn't affect it on hardness or pH. My plants root in it very well, even without fertilizer tabs (but I ended up adding a little to speed up the growth of some of my heavy root eaters).
