Low price. I wasn't expecting the brown and rough or Mitutoyo quality, but they arrived with gasket screws completely loose. The calipers were very jagged and felt like sand when opening, and the gasket slid right out. If they were more than $20 I would send them back but instead I took the opportunity to look for a diamond in the rough. I've put the shim back in, opened and closed them a few times and found that they don't go back to zero consistently. Deviation of -0.006 inch, which meant no backlash compensation. After watching a few YouTube videos on how to take it apart, I tried prying off the pointer needle to get at the bolts holding the mechanism to the caliper, but it wouldn't move without the right tool. Then I took the seal out again, removed the end stop and spread the caliper apart. There were tiny metal particles in the rack channel. I cleaned everything and broke any sharp edges as best I could. and pushed them back together. They're pretty messy with spacers and you can press in a variety of ways to release the wheels from the rack as you move them. I experimented with tilting them so that the index wheel came off and hopefully the game wheel was busy trying to wind the spring and after a few tries it worked! the whole palette and they're actually pretty good now. The clock doesn't work in the left field, but that doesn't bother me. The jaw end of the slat is rough and has quite a burr that can snag when opening from the ground up. I've smoothed it out as best I could without removing the splint and it's 95% better, but will still stick a little at times. I can live with that and it may go away when they wake up. TLDR; This is a diamond in the rough. If you're willing to put in some effort to get them working properly, then they're worth it. If you are looking for a set that works smoothly and perfectly right out of the box, this may not be for you.
