Take this with a grain of salt as I've been looking at docking stations and it may have affected my situation. I bought these to work with my Dell docking stations so I don't have to fiddle with HDMI cables when docking/undocking (I use a 4k display only HDMI, laptops have HDMI but docks don't). I was able to connect it to my 4k display and get it to work with a laptop that only plays 4k with full color depth at 30Hz or reduced color depth at 60Hz. Unfortunately, the red color is quite dark compared to the other colors in both modes, so it wasn't worth using with this laptop. However, it was worse for my gaming laptop; When I first plugged it into the dock it recognized the signal and set it to 4k @ 30Hz and worked fine, but when I tried to set the graphics output to 60Hz the video stopped showing and the laptop started its completely consuming significant resources and stopped responding to connection attempts. After that the connector stopped working, also on my other laptop at 30hz. So something about my laptop trying to send something more than it can handle be it color format, bits per component, pixel format etc. Got a replacement (to be honest great customer service +1 star btw) and another ordered one on top just to see if it was a one time use and all three did the same. the right 4k settings are set is not really worth it for me. I can understand if someone needs this to get their setup working, but for me it was only useful in that it didn't use the HDMI ports on the laptops themselves.
