Review on Razer Kraken Gaming Headset: Lightweight Aluminum Frame - Retractable Noise Isolating Microphone - For PC by Wagner Witlin

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great, but the volume controls are poorly designed

I use them with PS4 and I'm happy with them, although I have to admit they're the best few "gaming" headphones I've ever used, so I really have no idea if they're better or worse than the competition. I have a Razer Blade Pro laptop which is the best laptop I have ever owned (including a MacBook Pro) so I chose it almost entirely based on my very positive experience with Razer products in the past. In terms of comfort, I would definitely give it 5 stars. They are very light and "cool" in the sense that they don't start to heat up after a while. No matter how many hours in a row I use them, they're always perfectly comfortable and I never feel like my ears start to sweat or I have to take them off for a break. In fact, I even forget I'm wearing headphones. What I hate is the volume control. It's a dial on a cord, like almost all other headphones, but the problem is that it's a very loose, almost rotating dial. It's not a "tight" dial where it doesn't move unless you actually put your fingers on it and turn it up or down, or the type where it makes a little click when you turn it turn up or down on the marker. Therefore, with every movement (e.g. changing position or sipping water), it rubs against your clothing and the volume increases or decreases. You can't just turn up the volume and forget about it. It seems like I have to check every 15-30 minutes to see if it's still at the desired volume. You get used to constant checks over time, but they could definitely do better. It doesn't make any sense to me. I've used many different types of headphones (for music, etc.) that have similar volume controls, but none of them change volume with the slightest touch. I don't use a microphone so I have no opinion on that. I can say that it fits nicely in the headphones so you don't even know it's there. If the headphones weren't so comfortable and I wasn't already a fan of Razer products, I would definitely lower my rating. Might even give it back 3 stars for volume control issues. In fact, after reading my own review I think I should contact them to see if this is really what they intended or if I've come across a defective pair.

Pros
  • Light and strong: the bauxite aluminum Kraken frame is flexible and durable
Cons
  • Legacy model
