Too much moisture can cause mold and musty odors. Closets can have this in older homes. I bought this to add to a closet that had no insulation. I was impressed by the pleasant smell and after two days I noticed that the crystals were absorbing moisture. If you just want the closet to smell better, that's fine too. The package is very simple. It comes sealed. There is an insert for separating dry crystals from dissolved ones. You take out a pack of absorbing crystals and pour them into a bowl with the separator installed. Put on the slotted cover and let it work. I bought the lavender scent. That's very pleasant.
