Review on Optimized Universal 24214 B234SR120M A000I Fluorescent Ballast by William Stewart

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Didn't initially work for Costco's FEIT LED bulbs until they started spinning for a while.

Update 6th January 2021 After researching the FEIT website I found a ballast compatibility chart which states that my LED bulbs are compatible with this ballast. Tried it again with LED bulbs. Still does not work. I tried swapping the ends of a lightbulb, it didn't help. I tried changing the bulbs and it worked. At least I think it was consistent since I didn't write down what I did. Regardless, everything worked out in the end. So changed from 2 to 5 stars. So make sure you try all the different bulb orientations and swap them out if you're having trouble using LED bulbs with this ballast. a slight flicker in the laundry room, where LED lamps are installed. After a relatively simple installation, only one of the two bulbs is dimly lit. Basically there is no other. If I remove and reinsert a bulb while it's on, they both light up at normal brightness. But as soon as you turn them off, turn them back on, same thing. I returned the old fluorescent tubes, replaced the LEDs and they worked perfectly. I'm giving two stars for the fluorescent bulbs but deducting three stars because unlike 25 year old ballasts they didn't work with modern lighting. There should be something in the description to inform you that this may not work with at least some LED bulbs. It should also be noted that the yellow wires exit on the opposite side of the ballast than MagnaTek. The yellow wires were long enough to double over the case plus maybe 10 inches (I didn't measure that) so I had just enough length to connect the yellow wires to the bracket so no damage or mess. You may just want to cut the yellow pieces closer to the old ballast and not just to make sure you get the right length.

Pros
  • Hands Free
Cons
  • Very Expensive
