Review on Lightspeed Zulu 3 Aviation Headset - Comfort and Clarity for General Aviation Pilots by Trevor Blazis

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Excellent specs and sound quality but falls apart after 14 months

I bought a Zulu 3 when I started work on my instrument and commercial reviews 14 months ago. My David Clark headphones were still in great shape after a few years, but I decided it was time to try the 'better' ANR headset. Initially I was happy with the Zulu 3. The sound quality is good, the build felt solid, they're comfortable, the battery life is good, and they have a good feature set. However, a few weeks ago I noticed that the earcups were beginning to unravel at the seams and the coating was beginning to crack and peel off. I have contacted Lightspeed Customer Support to ensure this is considered a defect, although the soft parts of the headset are considered consumables not covered under warranty. I was surprised to learn that this was considered normal wear and tear and that Lightspeed would be happy to sell me a new set for $30. I'll be flying to remote, harsh areas next year and have real concerns about the durability of this headset when I start using it in these conditions considering it's falling apart after just over a year of light to moderate use. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend the Lightspeed Zulu 3 based on durability or customer service.
