The main reason I chose this brace is because it's advertised as waterproof and you can put it on without having to put anything on your foot. I recently fractured my ankle (lateral ankle is a bulge on the outside, Weber type A) and my doctor said I can weigh it down in a hiking boot and swim. I needed some sort of support that stays in the water and keeps the ankle from turning inward, but I'm allowed to show my toe. Unfortunately, this brace allows for too much side-to-side movement and less front-to-back movement. This pretty much does the opposite of what I need! Wrapping the top as tightly as possible with crossed straps only cut off blood flow but didn't prevent the movement I needed to prevent. And the lower heel cup dug into my heel from behind leaving a deep purple groove on my skin after 20 minutes. I found that without the lateral stabilizers, this brace would not provide the support I needed. Sizing note: I'm a 5ft 5in woman, size 6.5 in heels and size 7.5 in sneakers/boots. My ankle circumference is 12.", exactly the same with a little swelling on my left ankle (I measured both and they were the same). Size S/M fitted but I could see that part around the arch of the foot and the crossed straps were shorter than I wanted to provide enough support at the top.I think this brace would be better for front to back support and compression/warmth only mainly in the part of the ankle below the bones protruding on either side. However can I say it's waterproof!I chose to wear it to the pool because I wasn't sure if it would be supportive enough when I first tried it on and it stayed in place!I didn't dare test the limits of his support with my broken ankle so i tried it on my good leg when i got out of the pool and found i could fully curl my ankle on instruction snug, even with the straps so tight I found them uncomfortable. vka wasn't for me. I would like to return it but unfortunately I had to wear it to find that it would not suit my needs. Too bad because $25 is too much to spend on something you can't use at all. My Walgreens brace with heavy side panels fits my needs better. I just didn't think he would stay in the pool. Must try now Potentially positive. The hard material that runs under your arch doesn't stretch at all. Could this be a support for plantar fasciitis? I can take it out to try on my boots on my feet for long days when my arches are tired after I'm fully healed. It can provide just the right level of support for that. but I'm not sure if it would be comfortable enough to wear all day because it dug into the back of my heel when properly fitted. does not work for my needs and can be used in water as advertised. The velcro is so sticky that it was difficult to break and left marks on the fabric.
