We have a Linksys WRT32X wireless router in our house with passive cooling, ie there is only a large heat sink without a fan. While this is great for absolute silence, it does have a slight impact on temperature. I installed OpenWRT on the WRT32X for more control and router functionality, including temperature monitoring. When idle, the router maintains a temperature of 92°C in an ambient temperature of 30°C. Note that the router is outdoors in a TV console, so it's not locked in a closet with no ventilation. In tests with maximum load, it can reach a maximum of approx. 110c (!). Temperatures like that can seriously affect the lifespan of the electronics, so I have to do something about it. At this point I decided to use these fans to keep the temperatures at a more reasonable level. I didn't expect it to matter. I just put a fan on top of the router where it sucks hot air out of the router. The idle temperature dropped from 92°C to 64°C. You can look at the temperature chart I've attached. You can see when I plugged it in and the temperature gradually started to drop. I tried orienting the fan to blow cool air around the router instead of sucking hot air out, but I didn't notice much of a difference, so I just let it suck in hot air. The fans themselves are very easy to use. It's powered by a USB port, and the router conveniently has a USB port that I don't normally use, so I added a fan. There's also a built-in speed controller that lets you set it to off, low, medium, and high speed. I've noticed that the controller gets a little warm when I set it to low, but it's cool at high. I'm assuming there is some kind of resistor there that slows the fan speed down instead of diverting some of the current to heat. Speaking of fan speed, even at high speeds it is still quite quiet and moves a lot of air to the fan. The fans come in a set of two, so I use one for the router and the other for general ventilation to keep airflow going. The fans themselves have rubber feet and a metal grille on the front to prevent accidental contact with the fan blades. The rubber feet also ensure a certain distance between the fan and the device to be cooled, so that the air can flow through more easily. All in all this is a really good buy that goes a long way towards keeping our electronics cool and extending their lifespan.
