I had an unfamiliar heavy rug that the cat used as a place to urinate. The rug could not be washed in the washing machine due to the hard backing. I washed it outside and hosed it off well, hosed, let dry, hosed over and over again, then washed and hosed again, let dry, hosed over and over again to no avail, it didn't take the smell one way. I ended up rubbing the deodorized trash into the carpet fibers and letting it sit for a few days and then vacuuming and that took almost all of the smell out. I let it air out for a few days and then the carpet was finally odorless.
