My tailgate on my 1997 3rd generation Toyota 4Runner started acting up about a year ago. The latch didn't always open unless I applied a little force, and eventually the latch wouldn't return to the open position on its own, making it difficult to securely close the sunroof. The final straw came a few weeks ago when my back door opened wide as I drove over the flood bridge. It was enough to get me shelling out for this quality factory replacement part. First of all this is a genuine Toyota part and the fit and finish is perfect (no wonder). The back panel comes off fairly easily, and this thing fits in the place of the old one without much manipulation. The kit comes with a red plastic protective sleeve which I removed. It is already lubricated and can be refilled after installation if necessary. All in all it took 20 minutes to install and the lock now works like new including the door open warning function. My first latch was 260,000 miles so I don't expect to have to do it again. If so, I would order this part from Revain again in a heartbeat.
