Review on Herschel Dawson Backpack Chicory Classic Outdoor Recreation and Camping & Hiking by Jim Cronin

Not worth buying at full price

I bought this with the intention of upgrading my 5 year old Kavu rope sling bag. Everything is fine in the Kavu bag and it still looks as fresh and new as the day I bought it. To be honest, I just wanted to try something new. I would have preferred to have the weight of my purse on both shoulders and the Herschel bag seemed more than adequate for my needs. Why am I sending it back? Here's the summary: CONS: 1. Front flap pockets are intended for display only. They're wide open even when you close them with the magnetic snap (which isn't magnetic enough to make this bag secure, but more on that in a moment). I wouldn't feel comfortable putting anything in these bags unless I'm intentionally trying to lose and/or steal something. Now that we have 2 storage bags left, let's move on to number 2.2. The main magnetic clasp is SUPER SMALL and very weak. I had to physically put my hand in my pocket to lift the other side of the latch so she could make contact. No, it's 100% too much hassle to close the bag.3. The straps have no padding at all.4. There is only one small inner pocket and one hidden zippered side pocket. I would wish for a few more inner pockets or compartments, since the two outer pockets are not suitable for storing valuables. This bag is $25 overpriced for what it is in my opinion. Essentially, you are paying for the Herschel brand name. I would buy it again if it ever drops below $30. Today I admit that it wasn't all bad. There were some decent features in this bag. Pros: 1. Cute pattern and choice of color. There's a lot to choose from, although I didn't really *like* any of them.2. Decent size for a wallet replacement. Definitely not too small.3. The fabric makes a robust and durable impression. Possibly even waterproof to some degree (although I haven't tested this). While I love the look and style of the bag, it just isn't functional or comfortable enough to make me want to keep it. Not for $50+. I will continue to use my Kavu bag while I look for another replacement.

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • Security
