I shave first and foremost with the Gillette sensor (I like dual blade razors), then with this razor so I don't have to shave the blade (sensor) against the grain to get a perfectly clean shave (minimizes the 5 hour shadow). Being retired and sitting at home most of the time due to Covid-19, I can be lazy and only shave twice a week (and no one complains). As a result, my thick beard stays quite long when I shave. I have used the Panasonic ES8XXX family of foil shavers which are now being discontinued until the batteries die. I had the battery replaced in my latest ES8XXX at a Panasonic service center, but I've decided to consider an upgrade as well. I first looked at the currently available Panasonic shavers. My 8XXX were made in Japan but the current ones are made in China. This isn't necessarily a bad thing (iPhones are well assembled in China), but my experience of quality assembly in China requires extensive on-site quality control - I suppose Panasonic can do that, but I don't know what their current standards are. are. For some reason Panasonic, along with Gillette and other razor manufacturers (4, 5, 6, even 7 blades!) have joined the (wrong IMO) "bigger head is better" movement - I believe the big razors of the ARC and Gillette models are not well suited for shaving the upper lip and under the nose. It also worries me that I see many razors that say they are only meant to last a few minutes. The Braun is a notable exception, 50-60 minutes on a single charge, allowing me to shave a tough mustache longer, especially when not using a razor. All top razors (and everything else) are expected to be quite expensive. . European razors (like Braun in Germany) are made in countries with relatively high wages, which drives up their prices. I am willing to pay cheap premium prices for high quality products. I trust Wirecutter's reviews the most. They recommend Braun's (recently updated) 7-series, and while they say the 9-series is slightly better in some ways, functionally it's not worth the price difference. Reviews of the 9 Series on Revain include a number stating they prefer the 7 Series, regardless of the price. I have never used a Panasonic cleaner, it takes up too much counter space so I bought a Braun 7 series version without (any more) cleaner. I wash my razors in hot water and bought a small bottle of Braun razor oil for occasional lubrication. So far I'm happy with the performance (and economy) of my Braun 7020. As a longtime foil shaver, I didn't have to wait for my face to fit. I will update this review if there are any issues.
