40GB works! How it worked for me 27 " iMac with Retina 5K display.

Using the available Apple 8GB RAM. The screen faces down with the stalk of the large Apple logo pointing away from you. Start at the top slot and work Proceed down Install in this order Slot 1: 4GB Apple Slot 2: 16GB OWC Slot 3 4GB Apple Slot 4: 16GB OWC This worked for me! If everything is done correctly , your iMac will boot with no problems. Go to About This Mac, Storage. At the top you should see two 16GB slots. This also worked for me. Tried the reverse and got a prohibition sign on boot. Please see Look at the pictures if it's confusing.
