Brother Binding Foot SA109 and Distinctive Binding Foot

Having owned and used both products, I will be testing both the Brother SA109 binding foot and the Distinctive Ribbon binding foot at the same time. Essentially, this will be a comparison of two products. Both products are roughly the same price, currently around a $2 difference, which gives Distinctive a slight advantage. Both can be used on most low shank sewing machines that accept this type of snap foot. The design of these two brands is completely different. Brother is made entirely of metal, while Distinctive is a combination of metal and plastic. This is the biggest difference between them. The Brother has no adjustment, so the maximum finish size is limited to 1/4" (7mm), while the Distinctive can be adjusted from 3/8" to 3/4" (5 to 20mm). Advantage: Distinctive design also affects the comfort of use. The great foot has 2 grooves in the plastic. You put the folded edges of the bias binding into the grooves, adjust the width, attach the foot to the machine and thread the fabric between two edges of the binding tape .Brother's design is more like a tapered funnel.Pull the bias tape through the hole until it is visible on the other side, put your foot on the machine and thread the fabric through. You can of course do the above with both feet on the machine, but I often find it easier to attach the foot after I put the tie in. Due to design differences, I found the Brother foot more comfortable to use. When the fabric was properly aligned, it was easier and I could sew a little faster. Keep the diagonal band and fabric properly aligned when using the marked foot, my diagonal band came out of the groove. If I'm lucky I'll catch it right away, if not I'll have to remove the stitching and redo a small section. I think this can be especially problematic if you cut the binding strips yourself and they don't come out perfectly straight. Advantage: brother. In summary, I'm a retired guy who took up quilting as a hobby. I have arthritis and my hands shake a bit so I'm looking for something to make my life easier. I am using a Brother CS6000i which uses both legs. I'm glad I have both the Brother SA109 and Distinctive Tape Binding Presser Foot, they both work a little differently for me. Brother is easier to use and Distinctive is more versatile. Neither is perfect, but for me it's a much better solution than applying diagonal tape by hand or trying to fold the straps perfectly, iron them, and then sew them in place with a regular sewing foot. Everyone gets 4 stars for that.
