I really like this product, it can split a fan header into 8 and doesn't consume power from your motherboard. It also does this while looking sleek just in case you need to place it in a prominent spot in your case. It doesn't feel cheap, but it doesn't feel like it's top quality either. It is powered by the SATA connector. It connects the speed controller from the 4th pin on the motherboard to all 8 fans and it connects the speed information of the fan connected to the shiny port to the 3rd pin on the motherboard. It does not connect to the power or ground pin of the motherboard 4-pin fan connector. You can use it without connecting to the motherboard, but your fans can run at 100% all the time while mine run at 40% most of the time, and damn they're quiet! It's really nice to be able to use the fan speed control for so many fans, in my case 6 140mm Be Quiet! Silentwings PWM fans. If you have fans of different sizes, for example 3 140mm fans and 1 120mm fan, I would recommend connecting a 120mm fan directly to your MB and connecting 140mm fans to such a hub. This allows your MB to see the speed of any size fan. I'm not sure if this makes a huge difference or not, but I found that on another computer the 140mm fans spin at 550 RPM and the 120mm fans spin at 1200 RPM, when both are set to 40% power. I'm glad this uses the SATA power connector instead of the IDE power connector. Finally I have a PC without IDE power connectors :)
