Review on πŸ’‘ Seasonic Focus SGX-650: Compact 650W Gold SFX Power Supply with Full Modular Design and Silent 120mm Fan by Brandon Page

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Another solid power supply from Seasonic

The SGX-650 is a fully modular SFX-L 80Plus Gold certified 650W power supply. The SFX-L is a slightly larger power supply form factor than the SFX: in particular, it has more depth - 125mm instead of 100mm. This makes room for an internal 120mm fan for cooling instead of a smaller 92mm fan, which is beneficial for airflow and noise. However, due to this longer physical size, you should plan accordingly based on your PC case. It should also be noted that Seasonic uses a fluid-dynamically mounted fan, so there are no cheap sleeve bearings here. When you first open the box, you'll see that the cables and accessories are in their own cloth bag, while the power supply is in another cloth bag. Everything feels very high quality right from the start. Specifically, the kit includes an SFX-ATX adapter plate that allows this power supply to be used in a case that normally only fits regular ATX power supplies (more on that later). I'm using this PSU with an overclocked Ryzen 2600X with a GTX1060, all in a Fractal Nano S chassis. The PSU is completely silent during light usage (web surfing, watching Netflix, etc.). The fan doesn't spin until I start the game and when it spins it's pretty quiet. The rest of my review consists of notes related to my specific use case. If you want to use this with the Fractal Nano S, read on. One of the reasons I bought this particular PSU is that a traditional ATX PSU leaves the graphics card an uncomfortably small margin. If you use the included Seasonic adapter, your power supply will not sit flat on the bottom of the case. The Seasonic adapter plate moves the PSU closer to the center, which doesn't *increase* the distance between the GPUs in the Nano S. Luckily I noticed this beforehand and bought the Silverstone SFX-ATX adapter plate separately. One thing I left out: the length of the included cables. Those specs are listed on the Seasonic website, so it's my fault. If you want to use this power supply in a larger case, please measure the cable length you need. You may need extensions! On the Nano S in particular, the motherboard cable wasn't long enough to run behind the motherboard tray, so I had to buy extension cords. The supplied motherboard cable is 350mm long and the CPU cable is 400mm long. The CPU cable was actually quite long, but just barely. I also bought an extension cord for this, although it wasn't 100% necessary. In conclusion, I would like to say that I have every reason to believe that this power supply will last a long time. Seasonic's warranty is 10 years, so rest assured. If you follow any of the reviews on JonnyGuru, you can see that Seasonic routinely overwhelms everyone else on things like voltage ripple, and they often go above and beyond the 80Plus model's efficiency rating. I recommend this power supply to everyone without any problems. Just remember to take some measurements first.
