The consensus of 3.3 stars seems low to me for these cans. A more accurate rating would be 4.7-4.8. Apple really excelled at making them. I own two high-end systems and can attest that the bass in this is superior to that of B&W, Sony, and the like. Sony 1000 is the closest alternative in my opinion. Sony, however, places a lot of emphasis on dynamic sound, a common practice used by manufacturers of low-priced hi-fi systems, so the bottom is average and the top is much rougher. For me, the most glaring benefits of Apple's AirPods Max are their superior sound quality, their ease of use and portability throughout the house, their relatively compact design despite their size, their reliability, and the fact that they are compatible with all of my Apple devices. The downsides are a lack of protection, subpar performance, and restricted manipulation. The maximum sound quality requires the Bluetooth 5.0 version of your iPhone or iPad; on v 4.0, the sound is unfortunately simplified and no longer very fascinating for listening to music or watching movies. Even though they sound fine when using Apple Music, they really shine when using a high-quality streaming service like Tidal or Qobuz. Along with them came my first exposure to the sonic distinction between CD and Master quality. Have fun buying stuff, please.
