I bought this for my extremely active 6 month old kitten. I knew he would love it because he loves anything that moves to chase after. It works well, the only reason I can't give it more than 3 stars is that you have to unscrew the two halves of the ball to turn it on or off. The battery cover must be closed to turn on, and the battery cover must be open so that the battery hangs halfway to turn off. When you turn it on by closing the battery compartment it starts spinning immediately, so you need to connect the two halves to the spinning motor, allowing the half of the sphere that the motor spins in to spin too. That's the only way to turn it on and off. Why isn't there an on/off switch? Otherwise it's a good toy and my kitten finds it very interesting. Not too noisy, not too big and bulky, suitable for both cats and dogs. It also smells slightly like "burning plastic" when it's on, which I can't imagine makes much of a difference, but FYI. Good for cats who need to catch and kill something I think they naturally have. The motor is quite powerful and I think any cat or dog would have a blast watching this thing roll around on the floor. Works equally well on wooden/hard floors or low rugs. I would buy it again, I just think adding an on/off switch would make this item that much better. EDIT: I just read a review from 2011 that said the new design this person got has an on/off switch. Well I bought my 2016 and it doesn't have an on/off switch. So I'm not sure what happened there.
